Diversification isn't the problem. Losing specialization is. When the people selling television begin to devalue their core product, advertisers soon follow. In trying to become everything to advertisers, are television stations losing focus on the thing they were uniquely positioned to do best?
Traditional Television has a predictive posting problem. Stations sell program ratings. But that’s not where the commercials run. If advertisers are buying the audience of a program, maybe it’s time to ask: Where did my commercials actually run and how many people were actually there to see them?
Local television spent decades building trust with its communities. It quick makes cuts. At some point, cutting costs stops making the product more efficient and starts making the product less valuable.

Local TV is facing plenty of outside challenges. But some of its biggest problems may be coming from within. Changes in talent, the sales model and the product itself are raising an important question: Is local television slowly weakening the very things that once made it valuable?
