Every task you delay doesn’t disappear; it just weighs on you quietly until it drains your energy. Discover why the secret to a productive day isn't a better to-do list, it's having the discipline to tackle your most dreaded task the moment you sit down at your desk."
Not out of enjoyment, but because I know what happens if I avoid it.
The call I've been avoiding lingers in my mind all day. The uncomfortable conversation I keep postponing takes up mental space that could be used for something more productive. That prospect list I neglected remains untouched.
Sound familiar?
Every task you put off doesn’t go away. Instead, it quietly weighs on you until you address it or convince yourself it wasn’t important.
Here’s what I’ve learned: once you tackle the hard thing, the rest of your day feels lighter. It’s not that everything goes perfectly, sometimes the call is rough, or the news isn’t good. But at least you’re done, and finished feels better than carrying things around.
Salespeople have prospect lists to work on. Business owners delay decisions. Everyone has difficult tasks they’d rather avoid. Momentum builds once you tackle those things first, powering you through the day.
This approach works in life, too. Some mornings, I really don’t want to go to the gym. On those days, I push myself, add an extra set, and finish strong. Getting started is always the hardest part, but once you’re moving, momentum takes over, and you might even enjoy what you once dreaded.
I am not perfect at this. I’ve had boxes in my garage for six months that I keep meaning to move. Maybe I’ll get to them this weekend. Maybe.
In business, the key is this: Do the hardest task first. Lifting that weight makes the rest of your day flow.
What have you been putting off today? Start there. Let it lighten your whole day.
