Overcoming Unexpected Challenges in Business: Figure It Out

when a man down, find a way, figure it out, win.

We cannot predict every variable. We cannot control the referees, the market shifts, or the unexpected "red cards" handed to our businesses. Sometimes, the deck is stacked against you, and the original game plan goes out the window.‍ When the unexpected happens, you have two choices: focus on the unfairness of the circumstances, or adapt.‍ Taking decisive action rather than making excuses is what puts you in the winner's circle. When you're down a man, you don't quit, you find a way, and you figure it out.

Find a way. Figure it out.

I’ve been having so much fun watching the World Cup.

Partly because I’m a lifelong fan of the game, I played, my son played from age 5 to 18, and it brings back so many incredible family memories.

I enjoy watching world-class players from other countries that I don’t normally get to watch.

An added bonus this year, the USA team is incredible greate, and supporting them feels patriotic at a time when we really need to come together.

During a recent match, our star forward, Folarin Balogun, received a red card. That meant we had to play the last 40 minutes of the game one man down, and he’ll be sidelined for our next critical match against Belgium.

The USA team responded to his absence with fantastic play and teamwork. Even scoring their second goal one man down.

The announcers were all debating the call, saying it didn't look like a red card. But those were the circumstances.

During the post-game analysis, Carli Lloyd, a legend from the winning USA Women’s World Cup and Olympic Gold Medal teams, said something that hit me:

"Find a way. Figure it out."

And right there is the ultimate business lesson.

We cannot predict every variable. We cannot control the referees, the market shifts, or the unexpected "red cards" handed to our businesses.

Sometimes, the deck is stacked against you, and the original game plan goes out the window.

When the unexpected happens, you have two choices: focus on the unfairness of the circumstances, or adapt.

Taking decisive action rather than making excuses is what puts you in the winner's circle.

When you're down a man, you don't quit, you find a way, and you figure it out.

How do you handle the unexpected "red cards" in your business or industry?
