A Memorable Ad Isn’t Always a Memorable Advertiser

Sng open from the TV show Bewitched

Some TV shows and movies stay with us for decades after just a few notes or words. What can advertising learn from that? In a crowded marketplace, a memorable ad isn’t enough. People need to remember who the ad was for.

OK, I’m not making up my own language. I’m just getting a little reminiscent.

It’s interesting how some of the old TV shows and movies I watched have stuck with me for decades.

I don’t have that same instant connection with many of the new shows I watch today. The shows are good, no doubt. There are just so many of them now that fewer seem to have that incredible staying power.

Hum along with the “notes” below or read the words and see how quickly you can name the show or movie.

“Here’s the story of a lovely lady…”

“Now, this is a story all about how

My life got flipped-turned upside down…”

And one that doesn’t even need words.

Six friends. A couch. A fountain.

You probably recognized most of them.

Bewitched.

Jaws.

Mission: Impossible.

The Brady Bunch.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Friends.

If you missed any, now that you know the names, you can likely hear it in your head.

Some of you probably haven’t watched these shows or movies in years. Maybe decades.

Yet something stuck.

There’s a business lesson in that.

What can you put into your advertising that creates that kind of recall?

A sound. A phrase. A character. A visual. A style.

Something distinctive that people begin to associate with your business.

I see commercials all the time that I really like. Great production. Funny. Clever. Entertaining.

Then the commercial ends and I realize something:

I have no idea who it was for.

That’s a problem.

We’re advertising in an incredibly crowded marketplace. Getting someone’s attention is hard enough. If they remember your commercial but don’t remember your business, you missed one of the most important parts.

You don’t need to create the next Jaws theme.

But you should be asking:

What is memorable about my advertising that makes people remember me?

Because a memorable ad and a memorable advertiser are not necessarily the same thing.

And ultimately, it’s the advertiser we need people to remember.
